Postpartum Body Support: There’s No Need to “Bounce Back”

Postpartum Isn’t a Before-and-After Story

There’s so much pressure on new mums to “bounce back” after having a baby.

To get your body back. To fit into your old clothes. To somehow return to the person you were before pregnancy as quickly as possible.

But postpartum isn’t a before-and-after story.

Your body has just been through something incredible. Pregnancy, birth and those early months of motherhood can change your body, your routine, your priorities — and sometimes even the way you see yourself.

You deserve time, patience and kindness while you find your new normal.

You don’t need to “get your body back”

Your body didn’t go anywhere.

It may look different. Your clothes may fit differently. Things may feel softer, tighter, weaker or simply unfamiliar for a while.

And that’s okay.

The postpartum period doesn’t come with a deadline. There isn’t a particular week or month when you’re supposed to fit back into your jeans, start exercising again or feel completely like yourself.

For some women, that feeling comes quickly. For others, it takes much longer.

And sometimes “feeling like yourself again” actually means getting to know a slightly different version of yourself.

Support should feel supportive — not punishing

For us, postpartum support has never been about forcing your body to look the way it did before pregnancy.

It’s about helping you feel comfortable and supported in the body you have today.

Some days that might mean reaching for a supportive garment because you like the feeling of extra support around your midsection or because it helps you feel more comfortable and secure in your clothes.

Other days, it might mean living in your softest oversized T-shirt and stretchy pants.

Both are completely valid.

The important thing is that whatever you choose should be for you — not because you feel pressured to meet somebody else’s idea of what a postpartum body should look like.

Your postpartum wardrobe may change too

One of the less-talked-about parts of postpartum life is simply learning how to dress a body that may feel different.

The clothes that worked before pregnancy might not feel right anymore. Even once they technically fit, you may want different fabrics, different levels of support or completely different silhouettes.

Instead of focusing on the number on the tag, think about what makes you feel comfortable.

That could mean:

  • softer fabrics

  • high-waisted pieces

  • gentle support around your midsection

  • seamless shapewear under clothing

  • clothing that gives you room to move

  • or simply sizing up and choosing comfort for a while.

Your wardrobe is supposed to fit your body — your body does not need to fit your wardrobe.

If you choose postpartum shapewear, choose comfort first

Some women enjoy wearing shapewear or supportive garments after having a baby. Others don’t.

There’s no right answer.

If you do choose to wear something supportive, it should feel comfortable and allow you to move and breathe normally. More compression isn’t automatically better, particularly while your body is still recovering.

And if you’ve recently given birth — especially after a Caesarean birth, abdominal separation, pelvic floor concerns or other complications — speak with your doctor, physiotherapist or healthcare professional before introducing firm compression garments.

Your recovery comes first.

There is no deadline for feeling like yourself again

Motherhood asks a lot of you, particularly in those early months.

Your attention naturally goes towards feeding, settling, changing, comforting and loving this tiny new person.

But you deserve some of that gentleness too.

So whether today you feel amazing in a supportive outfit, spend the entire day in pyjamas, or change three times because nothing feels quite right — give yourself some grace.

Postpartum isn't about getting back to who you were.

It’s about finding comfort, confidence and your own version of normal in the body you have today.

To every new mum: give yourself the same patience and love you’re giving your little one. 🤍
